For installing illmatic PPF, use clean, filtered or distilled water mixed with a small amount of shampoo that contains no conditioners, moisturizers, or additives. The shampoo acts as a surfactant, allowing the film to glide smoothly across the surface before final positioning.
A standard starting mix is:
• 1 gallon of distilled water • 2 to 3 ml of baby shampoo
This creates enough slip for panel alignment without over-lubricating the adhesive.
PREP PROCESS
The surface should be thoroughly washed, decontaminated, and free of waxes, sealants, oils, and polishing residue. Clay bar or chemical decontamination is recommended to remove embedded contaminants. Panels should then be wiped down with an appropriate surface prep solution to ensure a clean bonding surface. Edges, gaps, and tight areas must be carefully cleaned to prevent lifting or contamination under the film.
IDEAL INSTALL CONDITIONS
For best results, installation should take place indoors in a clean, dust-controlled environment. Ideal ambient temperature typically ranges between 65°F and 75°F to ensure proper film flexibility and adhesive performance. Excessive heat can cause aggressive tack, while low temperatures may reduce conformability.
